Goze Monogatari: Satsukiyami

By Peter Strong

The night air is thick with the humidity of summer as the rain thunders down. Inside the Inn a group of travelers sit around the unlit hearth listening to the blind woman with the Shamisan reciting tales of old. She strums the strings of the Shamisan and in a clear voice speaks

"The sound of the Gion Shoja bell echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sala tree flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline. The proud do not endure, for they are like a dream on a spring night; the mighty fall at last, they are as dust before the wind…"

So goes the opening lines to the classic Japanese story, the Heike Monogatari. A story that chronicles the rise of the Heike and their eventual destruction at the hands of the Genji during the 12th century. A story of the Taira Clan verses the Minamoto Clan. Of red verses white…

A systemless tale set in Edo Japan in the early 17th century for 5-6 players.
